Children of Men - Trailer analysis
The Genre
Dystopian Survival - Which focuses and is defined as a society characterized by a focus on negative societies such as mass poverty, suffering, oppression that has been brought to light by society itself. We can tell the genre because of the narrative, the problem faced by the world as a society is mass infertility, to the point where populations are decreasing. Due to possibilities like pollution, and human DNA engineering which is heard in the dialogue of the trailer. We can also tell it is a survival as they are being hunted by the authorities and the public, trying to kill them, as they journey to the human project on the coast.
The Narrative
Set in 2027, when civilization has succumb to Infertile in the female population, no children have been born for the past 18 years and science is at a loss to the cause, or indeed any sort of cure. Lower economically developed nations like that of some African, and Eastern European countries, have collapsed due to their dwindling populations, forcing them to migrate to richer counties like the UK. In the middle of the nationalistic violence on the streets and rioting between authority and rebels, a London peace activist, turned bureaucrat, is forced to team up with his revolutionary ex wife. As she needs someone she could trust in the protection of a valuable piece of cargo. A young woman, who is pregnant, needs transportation to the coast where they can give her to a human project who will keep her safe. All hope for the future of humanity rests in their hands, as a shrinking population grows ever older.
Sound
Diegetic voice over is heard at the star of main character Theo, the sound is asynchronous as it is carried through a variety of shots of him and others. He talks about the situation of the world,"All Hope is lost" and "Since women stopped having babies" to give the view a sense of narrative, to make the visuals of him in a riot more understandable. This voice over dominance continues throughout, switching to different characters who share their own views and situations. The soundtrack is split into two parts, the first at the start is played by string, with high and low pitches fluctuating, creating a sound of suspense and mystery, which is combined with the voice over to give a very negative feel. The second part at the end is completely different, now focusing on more positive outlooks and how they are planning to save the girl who is pregnant, we hear a orchestral piece with smoother note transitions, giving a more hopeful atmosphere to the trailer.
Code of Enigma
The trailer brings up many questions, of course there is what is the final outcome of the movie? but also how did it end up in this situation? Why and how is this woman the only pregnant one in the world? Why are women infertile? All make the trailer a more successful form of product aadvertisement as the chances of a view being generate are a lot higher when there is an effective code of enigma.
typical Shots/ Camera
The trailer uses well and often a series of tracking shots following the main character of Theo, Him running through crows and just generally walking. This is used to show his journey through the narrative and how we are following his journey, and the people associated with him. Also conventional for a trailer is the use of fade ins and and outs to create a sense of pace. which is reduced as the trailer builds in pace and instead uses cutting to achieve this

Props - Adam
As Adam is a teenager of 17, he will show this through items of clothing that normally you would see young people wearing, such as Hoodies, for this I have found him a faded scruffy looking one, that after a bit of editing, ripping sowing, should look really good under his main coat.
He will be wearing a pair of grey faded, muddy jeans that have rips and tears down them and maybe a bloody bandage tied around one leg.
Over his jumper he will be wearing a large coat, slightly bigger than him, to give an idea that maybe it could have been his fathers or just one he scavenged, I want to sow patches of cloth in area on the coat to make it look more makeshift and worn, which applies for the majority of clothes any of the cast will be wearing. Also blood and dirt will be applied to mimic the bleak and deadly environment.
To fit with the environment, and to show that he does have some common sense he will be wearing worn scruffy walking boots. As they are in a rural area they need as much comfort and traction they need to walking boots will be seen on both characters.
"The Deprived" First poster draft
FIRST DRAFT OF POSTER
As part of the main task of producing our own Film Trailer, we were also asked to construct another form of advertisement, a poster. This above is my first draft, of which I will be adding to, as feedback from peers and teachers have given me pointers in ways I can improve my work to make it even better. Along with The poster I wrote a full analysis of it which you see below.
"THE DEPRIVED"
MOVIE POSTER ANALYSIS
The motion picture title "The Deprived" could mean a multitude of things, but when combined with the font and the rest of the poster, it becomes more apparent that it is referring to the character as "deprived" What is he deprived of? This alone begins to raise questions relating to the film, such as; Why are these characters or a character being described as deprived? Or, what has happened to result in them being deprived? The font of the title directly relates to the meaning behind it, as it is a decaying, almost rusted font. This could symbolize the decaying or decay of humanity or civilization. It could even be taken as deep as saying that the degrading of the title could mimic that of the characters state or mental health.
The code of enigma is further added to when looking into some of the key images, or most important art featured in the poster. The central piece is the figure standing facing away from the camera. In his hand is a picture of two boys, who these boys are and why he is clutching their photo are more questions raised by this image, adding to the mystery of the piece and the possibility of a potential viewers interest being peeked. looking into the details of the figure, or, mise en scene, the viewer starts to build a better understanding of the possible narratives or themes the movie could contain. The costume of the character, whom we presume is male, due to his posture and clothing, is ragged and damaged. Dirt, armature stitching and blood covers his faded coat and hooded top, this tells us that he has been involved in violence and is potentially living rough, due to the condition of his clothes and person, as we see blood running down his hand onto the faded crumple picture.
Further analysis of the blood shows it dripping down over the picture, and it seems as if it is almost separating the two boys from each other. The blood could represent their segregation through death, or just something of an evil nature. Again more questions to add to the code of enigma. Also on the character is a rucksack, help together by string and duck tape, this shows how resourceful the person has to be, maybe due to his position, which is unknown. Along with the bag he holds a wooden baseball bat in the side holdall, again relating to the themes of violence. Such a blunt instrument gives a sense of brutality, it is not as quick or demanding of any skill to wield, which could suggest the character as aggressive and maybe even brutal in his acts.
Other key images include the newspaper on the floor, and the man-made pole and rubbish bin overturned on the road. The newspaper, although taking up little space in the bottom right hand corner of the page is significant in the sense that it gives more background information to the narrative "RIOTS HIT CITIES" and "Death count Rising" But this insight again seems to raise more questions than it can answer, and so again the code of enigma grows. In the other section of the poster we can see an electricity pole with wires wires dangling and the pole itself sitting unevenly to the ground. Up the sides we see vines growing, the same can be seen on the ground around the rubbish on the road. This could give us a key insight into a possible theme of the movie. Nature fighting back, as it is growing over the man made objects.
In terms of the posters iconography, the only aspects I can see as iconic are the use of blood on the character and the decaying objects like the pole. The blood maybe linking to the horror or thriller themes in the story and the decaying environment seen in genres such as apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic, which would explain the characters mise en scene as being so damaged and decayed.
The character is positioned so that we can only see his one side, his head and left arm are completely cut out of shot, creating a further era of mystery, what could he be holding, if anything, in his other hand? And more importantly who the character is, and whether he is one of the boys in the picture or if he is unrelated. His posture seems relaxed as he lightly hold the piece of paper, although his condition would suggest otherwise. Maybe he is under some mental trauma? Or his motivation, to possibly find one of the boys in the photo is gone.
The tag line "When they come, will you run? Or fight?" This directly asks the viewer a question. What would you do in his position, would you be more reserve or aggressive? Another aspect adding to the code of enigma, the tagline suggests that there is something to run from "they come" and that an option would be to run, implying that they, or, it, is dangerous. This poster gives the impression that its audience is towards the older end of the spectrum, 18 - 25 years. The poster gives a very negative them, and I find is similar to that of "The Road" which itself is a film that contains some disturbing images. Its unique selling point I believe is its main characters, usually there is a dominant male and a more vulnerable young girl or male. In this the story is surrounding two similar ages males in their late teens, but with the difference of contrasting morals instead of sex or dominance.
FEEDBACK
Teacher: Positives// - I managed to create a memorable image, that will help the view to remember and think about my poster, with effective connotations.
- I created an effective film title and a font to go along with it, that is effective in reflecting the narrative of the film.
Negatives, things to improve// - The positioning of the tag line, within the title is hard to distinguish, so re-position this to a place that is more effective.
- To allow the audience to relate to the character, show maybe the back of his head to get more of a sense of age and identity. Or maybe place other items that suggest youth ( Idea, badges of bands or sayings on his bag ) making him seem more vulnerable.
- Must add Billing Block into the poster, along with Multi-media platforms, Twitter, Facebook etc. which will tend to the target audience that is younger adults.
- Another problem I found was that the telegraph pole in the background might be hard to create or find, whereas a decaying building may be easier to find and may even be more effective.
Peers: Summary// - I received similar comments from my classmates, that I need to include the billing block etc. But mostly positive feedback from everyone.
All in all I was pleased with the way I created my poster and the end product, I believe that if I take all the feedback and apply it to the poster I will definitely receive even better results from it. So I will be updating soon, a new version of my poster, with added content that I received from my feedback.
Film Trailer | Audience Demographic
Upon creating the plot, we as a group, had strong feelings
for a post-apocalyptic survival story, a story that would engage and keep the
audience hooked with the trailer. With this in mind the following blog will
inform you of the target audience, demographically and psychographically, that
our trailer is aimed for.
After researching the genre online I have found that often
in this genre the films are incredibly bleak and contain strong language and
violence. They are physiological challenges on the audience that almost prove
to be a test, to see how much they can take. They often contain suspenseful
elements to link in with the survival genre and thus create a gloomy, yet
incredibly eye-catching atmosphere. With these facts in mind I have chosen a
age range of 25-40 years of age. This has come after gaining secondary research
on sites such as (www.idmb.com) which told me that due to the physicalogoical baggage
the genre can inflict on the viewer, the intended audience would need to be of
an older age bracket. After linking this in with my project I feel that this is
a valid statement and would influence our intended audience. I feel anyone
under the age of 25 are vunerable to be mentally affected by the bleak
intensity of the film and this (in my opinon) has to mean 25+ is the correct
age bracket. To stop at 40 years is simply a prediction that those aged 25-40
would find the film more entertaining, more hard-hitting than those older than
40, possibly because those who are 40+ are more immune to the hard-hitting
nature of the film, and this is something I would want every member of the
audience to feel, affected. This is why the film will be a 18 certificate.
The ideal target audience for the film, would be an avid
film fan, one with a vast collection of films, and one who is immersed in all
film genres. The person takes pride in their love affair with motion pictures
and actively goes to the cinema on the regular basis and this person has
inter-textual knowledge in the film/TV world.
This demographic find films as a art form and loves to discuss their
passion. They are hard working and from a working class background with a
committing job. Jobs most notable consist of computing, blogging and other jobs
in media that relate and link in to their passion of movies. They are also avid
gamers, with at least one big name console. Their income will be low to
moderate, showing their determination to exhaust their passion of films whilst
overcoming possibly strict financial barriers. The demographic would be 65%
male and 35% female symbolising the stereotypical "nerdy" culture and
nature that the audience will possess. Psychographically the demographic also possesses
the urge to spend fairly large sums of money (in accordance to their earnings)
to satisfy their film cravings, either in conventions, cinema trips or a
friendly get together.
Actors, Locations and Props
Cast
The two leading rols of Jack and Adam, who play the two teenaged boys will be played by myself, William Kearse and a fellow student Robert King. Me playing the younger boy Adam, and Rob playing the older, more agressive Jack. As for the rest of the cast, consisting of gang members, A gang leader, and other wanderers. These will be played by other members in the group, Toby Howell, Lloyd Pocknell and Charlotte Parfitt. the gang leader being played by either Toby or Charlotte, as of yet is undecided. For extras and gang members I have managed to find a few people that are willing to take there time out tohelp with the trailer, mostly close friends. Will be uploading a full character profile for the two main boys, with images of actors.
Location
I have identified and visited many of the locations in which me and my group will be shooting at, these area are public and more often out in rural areas so any permission to enter or film in these area should not be needed. One of our main locations is up the side of the Blorange Mountain, overlooking Abergavenny. This is where we have found an abandoned farm house in which we can shoot a lot of our scenes. We have also explored the woods to the east of Abergavenny and found a number or deralict stone houses in which we can film. Most of our other locations will be on quiet roads as our film depicts a journey.
Props
At this point I have started to collect the props we need, such as clothing for the actors, bags, wepons etc. Also rubbish, as we need it to create a better Mise en Scene of our locations.

Codes and conventions of The Post - Apocalyptic, Survival Horror (Thriller) genre
To sucessfully create my own trailer of this genre, I though I would do some background research into the common codes and conventions of the Post apocalyptic Thriller genre.
- A tight community of protagonists/ survivors of the apocalypse. - Such films as "The book of Eli" follow this convention, although the film does not follow the towns people, rather a lone survivor passing through. But it still gives a sense of civilisation, no matter how barren or damaged. Other movies such as "The Road" as this follows two male figures, and any signs of other survivors are depicted in canibalistic smaller groups, or families of dead people, hanging from trees, this creates a larger sense of hoplessness in the audience and challenges these conventions.
- Abandoned and Isolated locations. - This is a very common convention for this genre, and is probably, in my view, one of the most important. Creating a sense of loss of a civilised society, barren wastelands of deralic houses and cars does this theme justice, and agin created a sense of hopelessness that the audience feels for the characters.
- Survival. - All movies of this genre must stress the survival theme, as it allows us, the audience, to feel real fear and loss for the characters we are identifying with.
- Heroic male protagonist, mentally and physically. - This is again important as the audience needs a dominant character to give the narrative, and the story a chance, if the character was weak and vulnerable we would not expect them to survive the apocalypse, so making the film unrealistic.
- Dangerous and deadly antagonists. - This can be shown in the general sense or through a single character. Usually in this genre it is a dangerous male, with a gang or group following him, that do his bidding. For example, "I am Legend" although the antagonist is not human, there is still a ranking of authority, with him at the top, and his minions below him. Again the Book of Eli is another good example of this, with a man in charge of a large gang of ravengers, making him appear more dangerous and deadly.
- Death. - Death is another key theme in this genre that needs to be highlighted. To create other themes in the movie such as fear, hatred, loss, and depravity, death is the usual strating point. "The Road" is a exe;ent example of a movie that uses this to its advantage. Showing images of families that have hung themselves and people that have been brutal killed for the basics of supplies. It is rear to find a post - apocalyptic movie without a large influence from this theme.
- A dangerous and deadly environmeant. - This links to both the abandoned and isolated locations and the dangerous antagonist. A deadly environmeant in the movie means that throughout the film there is always a sense of tension, as the characters can never really escape the danger. As they live and journey in it. And this links to the next point of;
- Constant fear.

Audience profile - Mood board
For my motion picture, "The Deprived" I am aiming to target a specific audience, that will find my film to fulfils their needs in entertainment.
My audience will be prodominantly avid movie buffs who watch a range of genres as they have a wide apreciation for film and cinema, and enjoy, above most things, going to the pictures with friends to watch a new, or remastered release. They find a good film to be one that can build atmosphere and hold an erra of mystery to the plot or narrative. They are more interested in the narrative of a movie than the cheaper thrills of jump scares or, not so cheap thrills of choreographed explosions and epic battles. They may also be viewed as prosumers, as they enjoy breaking the boundaries of consuming, usually on an amature level, such as making their own short movie for Youtube, or writing their own narratives, and creating origional ideas fom nothing.
I am planning to target and Audience of 18 - 25 year olds as my movie contains some graphic and or, disturbing visuals, that only people of a certain age can apreciate as more than just violence or horror, but as a way of creating panic and atmosphere in the narrative, for which I believe the audience demographic fits the best. Due to the darker themes of death and violence it is also aimed more at the male audience as they may find or enjoyment in these key themes.

Stryboard Animatic ideas
Here is another shot we took on location, to show the character hiding behind a wall as the gang, in the background search the area, just a rough idea but I though it would be effective if we composed it correctly
Just to give an idea of another shot, showing the two boys, or a character walking through the wasteland.

Locations exploration - and anamatic shots
I managed to find a location of an old abandoned house that had recently been burnt down, the structure left looked safe and stable enough to enter so I took some pictures as this could be used as a location for one of the trailer scenes. Some of these shots we will use in our animatic of the story board, some just environmental and others of characters .
I wanted to get a shot in the trailer to show how nature is slowly taking over once more, from man made buildings and constructions. So a still shot like this showing the over growing of plants swaying in the wind I think can represent this well.

Film Plot - The Deprived (Extended, in depth version)
The Deprived – Movie Plot (In Depth)
The setting is a
post-apocalyptic world where all known common law and political systems have
fallen into disarray. Riots formed in the cities, food became scarce, and soon
it became kill or be killed. We begin the story following a young boy called
Adam, at only 17 he has been traveling the wastes alone, heading south as the
days grow colder and darker. After searching a farmhouse for supplies he is taken
by surprise by a local gang who knock him out, place a sack over his head, and
drag him away. He begins to regain consciousness outside what appears to him as
an old industrial complex. All he sees is the sky above him through the gaps in
the stitching and the muffling of voices around him. Eventually a voice cracks
from the side to line them all up. This is where the story begins.
After a few second
Adam hears footsteps in front of him that stop abruptly. Again after a long
pause he is blinded by a sudden flash of light as the sack is pulled of his
head and a tall silhouette stands before him. He leans in close looking into
Adams eyes. He orders his men to throw him in with the others, and he is taken
into the rusted maze of steel and iron. He is dragged into a dark, cold room
where he is strapped to a pipe by his hands. Looking around him his eyes begin
to adjust to the light and he sees the others, all like him tied up against the
walls. Blood running from their heads, all a variety of ages, but all male. One
by one they are dragged from the room by their hair kicking and screaming. The
screams, one by one soon abruptly stopped. And again the same dark figure would
enter the room picking his next victim, with more and more blood covering his
dark skin and rusted machete each time. Until but Adam and another young boy
remained. As the door again screeched open, the figure approached Adam, cutting
his binds and grabbing his hair… before he could drag him clear the wall Adam
is released and he hears shouting and scuffled movement of feet behind him. He
turns to see the young boy, binds around the figures neck strangling him, until
his body lies motionless on the damp ground.
The two decide to
stick together and sneak out of the site, avoiding guards and taking what
supplies they could find of their own. They come across a map with a combat
knife dug through it on a table. As Adam runs out the door jack quickly grabs
it and follows. They run into the nearby woods where they are safer, they
wander through the woods till they find a small derelict cottage on the side of
a mountain where they decide to make camp as the light begins to fade. Setting
down their rucksacks and making a small fire, the both sit back against the
stone walls of the crumbling house in silence, staring into the fire. The older
boy introduces himself to Adam, “I’m Jack by the way” and Adam does the same.
After a silence Jack askes where Adam is heading and the pair begin to talk of
their journeys, Adam more open than Jack, who keeps most of his history to
himself. To which Adam respects, people have no good history after the
blackout, everyone just went insane, and those who didn’t either ended up dead
in the street, or wandering the wastes for, well, anything.
Jack pulls out the
dirty map from his pocket showing Adam, the map is covered in scribbles and
markings. The two decide they would stick together until they find enough
supplies to be on their way alone once more, “Strength in numbers” jack
mumbles. The next morning the two set of together. Thinking maybe one of these
markings on the map indicated a gang supply dump or something that would help their
situation.
They travel the
overgrown landscape together, scavenging abandoned houses for food and shelter.
They come across Items and places that remind them of what life was like
before, and how simple it was. Many of the houses and buildings they search,
they find people dead, that have opted out, either shooting themselves or hanging
them and their families. One house in particular they enter is still inhabited,
and a middle aged man takes Adam at knife point, obviously terrified the man
eventually releases Adam, to which jack responds by brutally stabbing the man
in the chest. Arguments break out between the pair on their differing views and
morals in situations, and tensions begin to build. Eventually we learn that
Jack had a younger brother called Michael, who was around Adams age. One night,
as Jack and Michael lived alone, Jack was out scavenging. Only to come back to
his secluded farmhouse to find his little brother is missing and a trail of
blood leading into the woods. Ever since Jack had promised himself he would
find his brother no matter what, and convinced himself that he was still alive.
He also shares that his parents Hung themselves from the tree outside his
window only a few weeks after the blackout, leaving him and Michael alone to
fend for themselves.
Eventually the two
find one of the markings on the map, Jack runs in, with excitement for what he
may find. Adam enters more cautiously and is hit by a smell that cuts through
him. He finds jack stood in the centre of the room, empty, apart from a floor
submerged in pile upon pile of torn and ragged clothes and dried blood. Jack
becomes angry and begins kicking and throwing his fists at the lack of
supplies. But he suddenly stops. Crouching down facing away from Adam he picks
up a child’s watch from the ground, it was his brothers. He never took it of
ever since he had it for Christmas when he was eight years old. Jacks eyes well
up and he stands shouting for his brother. “Michael!! MICHAEL!” Adam tries to
calm Jack down but is hit with Jacks anger and frustration as jack tells him to
leave him alone. The gang perusing them hears the shouting and goes to
investigate. Adam spots a trail of blood leading under and old bookcase, he
follows it, pushing it out the way to reveal a door way. Leading into a
basement. Where he finds a room with a large metal door at the far end, with a “caution,
Extreme temperatures, Freezer” on the door, the ground around it covered in
pieces of flesh and fresh blood. And old wooden table sits to the centre with
an assault rifle and ammo surrounding it, inspecting the rifle he finds a note
on the floor, it reads.
“Right we are running
low on ammo, so use whatever else you can find to kill em, we can’t spare any
more. Me and the boys never did like eating around the shrapnel anyway” …”Cannibals”.
Adam murmurs to himself, shocked and discussed at what he had just read… “We
need to leave now” Jack enters the room, with desperation still in his eyes. “What
is it… what does it say!?” Adam is reluctant to give him the note but jack
snatches it from his hands. Reading it carefully. As he reads the anger and frustration
builds in his eyes, tears begin to stream down his emotionless face. And he
drops the note.” Jack please, wait” Jack pushes past Adam throwing him aside.
Hearing the rabble of the gang outside, he picks up the assault rifle and cocks
it. Adam tries to grab it of him but Jack hits him over the head with the butt
of the gun, and Adam lays motionless on the floor. Blind fury fills his eyes
and he walks with gun in hand up the stairs and out the front door, where he is
greeted by a line of red eyed twitching men, all with blunt weapons and machetes
in hand. They snort and snarl at the sight of the boy, and with the order of
their ranking member “Get him!” they charge at Jack. With no hesitation, and a
dead, motionless expression, he lifts his automatic and unloads the whole
magazine into the 11 men, and the air is filled with a mist of pink blood, as
the body’s hit the concrete, and the echo of gunfire shuttles through the
valley. And everything turns silent.
Adam regains consciousness,
the ground around him is damp, and he realises he is in the centre of a field with
his hands binded behind his back. And he feels the cold steel of the gun barrel
slowly rest against his forehead. “Jack?” “Jack listen to me please… Everything
is going to be okay we can still find him” again he repeats, slower and more calm
“Everything is going to be okay” There is a long held pause and the sound of
wind in the trees and the grass swaying fills the air. Jack, in a quiet, almost
whisper of a voice murmurs. “Nothing is ever going to be okay.” He lifts his
rifle into his own mouth, pausing for a second, and fires, and his lifeless
corpse hits the soft grass, as birds flee and squawk around the field. And once
more the sound of wind fills the air.
Film Plot - The Deprived
The story follows two
teenage boys in a post-apocalyptic rural wasteland, struggling to survive and
scavenge for supplies. All the Earth’s natural resources have been depleted,
and the world drove itself into chaos, mass shootings, riots, looting. All
signs of any political system have faded, and law is no longer. It is kill or
be killed.
Adam a 17 year old boy, and Jack, a 19 year
old man meet through unfortunate circumstances of being captured by a Gang of
savages. They manage to escape, steeling supplies and a map with strange
markings and scribbles all over it. They decide to stick together and pursue
the strange markings on the map, hoping to find supplies or anything to help
them. On their journey we witness situations
that will test the two boys, and see them show their differences in morals and
conflicting personalities. Meanwhile the gang are perusing them as they have
possession of a map, that to them is very valuable, unknown to this the boys
journey onward, discovering more about each other, and also coming across
things that reminded them of what life was
before.
Adam being a shy, social recluse talks a lot
less than Jack, but is willing to share more about his past, and is very
upfront about it, Whereas Jack seems to show more confidence yet it very
reluctant to share his past with Adam, but eventually he tells him of his
younger brother who was kidnapped in the night when Jack was hunting. And that
he had been hopelessly trying to track him down ever since, even though deep
down he knows there is little chance of finding his brother Michael, it was all
he had left, and it is what was keeping him alive. Eventually the two come
across one of the markings on the map. They Explore inside and find a rooms
with the floors completely covered in torn, bloody clothes, men, women, and
children’s clothes. Jack discovers his brothers watch smashed on the floor,
sending him into a fury of anger and desperation. Believing he is nearby he
shots his name. Nearby the gang hear the screams and investigate. Adam spots a
trail of blood leading under a doorway and down into a dark basement, where a
note he finds on a table covered in blood tells him of how the house is where
they take the bodies for the cop. And suggesting the gangs cannibalistic
nature. Jack still hopeful follows Adam into the room… reading the note “This
time carve em up real good, we are running low on ammo now so use what you have
to deal with em, never did like eating round shrapnel anyway” – (note to
demonic) Jack brakes down, and turns to hysterics. Adam tries to comfort him
but he punches him throwing him down on the ground. Hearing the rabble of the
gang members approaching from upstairs he picks up a loaded Aka 47 from the
table, his body and arms limp, he loosely carries the gun up the stairs, where
he meets the gang as he steps out the front door. They stand there in a line,
with bats and knives in hand.
With tears in his
eyes, but with his face showing no emotion he throws up the automatic rifle and
cuts the line of men down. And a pink mist fills the cold misty air…
He finds Adam knocked
out on the floor and drags him out of the house into a field where he lays him
down on his side. As Adam regains consciousness he feels the cold hard metal of
the Aka’s barrel against the side of his forehead. Everything is silent, all
that can be hear is the wind in the trees and the swaying of grass. Adam, not
moving, slowly begins to try and reassure jack, that maybe his brother escaped,
and that “everything is going to be okay.” Again there is a long silence, as
Jack replies in a soft, tearful, almost whisper of a voice. “Nothing is ever
going to be okay”. He suddenly raises the rifle placing it into his mouth and
fires. The gunshot echoes through the valley. And birds squawk and flee.

Analysis of The Road Movie and Trailer
Analysis of "THE ROAD"
The trailer begins with a wide medium shot of the father covering his son with a blanket. This creates a starting equilibrium that is calm, the father showing care for his young son immediately establishing a paternal relationship between the pair. The light of the fire creates a warm, comfortable feeling, creating a setting of safety and shelter. Although this is juxtaposed with the rubble surrounding them, asking the questions where are they? Why are they there?
At the beginning also we are introduced to the Dietetic sound of simple piano chords, when linked to the visuals of an establishing shot showing a derelict church it creates a spiritual theme. This is continued when a shot shows the father kneeling down in prayer in a low-angled camera shot. This shot gives a sense of the man's importance to the boy, but also his inferiority to God. This inferiority is continued when the next two shots show a lightning strike and a wildfire, which the man cannot control.
Other important scenes include the father and son sitting in the darkness around a small fire, this creates a scene of the fear in the audience and highlights their loneliness in the wilderness. We also see the desolate landscape in which the father and son are travelling though. The abandoned roads, houses and cars suggest an apocalyptic environment, and the lack of other people at this point backs up this theory.
The pace of the trailer is created by the cutting and fades to black used. This trailer does not follow the usual conventions of its similar genre, and instead of creating a build in pace towards the end it varies throughout. The intense shots of running and people at gun point are broken up by more peaceful shots that diffuse the tension of the previous shots. Overall this creates a more positive spin to the trailer, regardless of its genre and style. Being a viewer of the film I can say that the trailer set a much more upbeat feel to the film than it actually is. The film creates themes of loneliness, fear, religion, isolation and death. Whereas the trailer focuses on the more positive aspects and themes like "Carrying the fire within" but does go into these themes briefly.
The target audience for this film is definitely not a family orientated film. It is more aimed at adults maybe 18-25 but it is also aimed at older as maybe fathers can relate to the main character so up to 45 years of age.
Analysis and key consepts of film/ Motion Picture
Along with the trailer I have also watched the film a few times before and so decided to watch it again so I could analyse, and maybe take some ideas from it, as my genre and style are very close to this. In the film they use close ups, especially in falshbacks to give a scene a certain atmospher and feel. For example they use the flashback close up of the fathers hands gently playing the piano. The lighting in these scenes also has a huge impact on the viewer as throughout the movie we adjust to the dark and dull colours of the present day earth, to which we are almost blinded by the smooth, orange light of the flashbacks. This is a feature I would love to mimic in my own production, maybe a character awakens from a dream, starting in the light, and then suddenly awakening to the darkness of his present day environment.
The movie also relys heavily on establishing shots to give the viewer a larger sence of scale in the movie, and the shear destruction that earth has surcomed to. Unfortunately for my trailer, I have no experience in special effects of have the budjet to create large environments to fit the film. Therefore I intend to use it on a smaler scale, and as it is set in a more rural area, I think I will be able to include a few releavant establishing shots, of mountains and electic plylons etc.
The Road also shows of an amazing level of detail, especially in its meis en scene of props and costume. Even basic makup such as dirt and blood are used very effectively, and really create a sense of despiration and fear in the characters. This is another key elemnt I hope I can mimic in my own trailer, the ability to create a sense of a characters history with out showing more than the clothes on their back and dirt covering their face and hands.
There is a very strong representation of light and dark, and even the characters verbaly convey this message "Carrying the flame inside" "and are we still the good guys?" but it is shown most effectively through the use of flame and lighting from the sun.

Textual analysis of Carrie, Movie Trailer
I was asked to do a analysis of a movie trailer relevant to my own movie idea. I chose Carrie as I wanted to mimic the pace of this trailer in the one I am creating with my group.
